Wedding culture in Canada

Like any other country, Canada has its own tradition when it comes to wedding celebrations. Most Western countries share the same tradition and customs but there are some unique traditions that are solely Canadian in nature and are also used even until today.

Canada is a diverse country with a lot of mixes when it comes to its people and culture, and because of this weddings in Canada differ depending on the place where the wedding will be held. Most Canadian weddings are influenced by the people and the weather that is present in Canada.

A wedding ceremony in Canada is both fun and entertaining since Canadians are known for their generosity and hospitability. The tradition is often started with the asking of the guy for the hand of a girl and getting the couple engaged followed by a simple or elaborate engagement party for the couple. When a date is set and the details set – some use a wedding planner or leave the planning to the couple – a bridal shower and bachelor party is done prior to the actual wedding. A bachelorette/bachelor party is often held as the final day of singlehood. Friends of both parties exchange gifts and stories as a way to show support and blessing to the couple. Both parties are held separately and couple aren’t given the inside scope of what happens during the said parties.

The wedding ceremony itself is breath taking. Although the details are either done by the wedding planner or the bride, Canadian weddings are known for innovation and creativity. Brides often wear the traditional white wedding gowns but are shifting to other alternatives during the recent years and grooms still stick to the suit that complements the wedding gowns of the bride and the whole entourage. Brides are also seen to purchase cheap wedding dresses since it is practical yet convenient for both parties. There are some brides that wear designer wedding dress during the ceremony itself and changes to an alternative cheap wedding dress during the reception.

Canadian receptions are also as fun and entertaining as the wedding itself. There are all sorts of entertainment that can last all night long. Friends and family of the couple often stand up a podium or a spot and shares stories about the couple (embarrassing most often) and have a good laugh while drinking their wine or beverage. During earlier times Canada has a tradition called a Trousseau Tea which is a tea party held by the mother of the bride together with neighbors, acquaintances, colleague – basically people who are not part of the actual wedding. What is done during a Trousseau Tea party is when the mother shares the gifts or trousseau of the bride to the guest wherein they can also share their blessing and joy towards the couple to be united. Before this was popular for smaller parts of the regions to “invite” everybody to the celebration but since the cost of everything has gone up, Trousseau Tea’s are not as popular today as it was yesterday.

Another Canadian wedding is the Wedding Wheel. A wedding wheel is a customary tradition wherein the guest forms two lines during the reception and contributes or “pays” a dollar or more to have a chance to dance with the bride.

Weddings in Canada are always worth remembering with all the tradition and customs partnered with the newer traditions that couple performs. Either you want to stick to the tradition and custom or you want to try something different, wedding are always the best time to experiment and be creative to make it more memorable as it should be.
